It is unfortunate that today, we live in a day and age where giving back to society is a scarce practice. Of the plethora of celebrities today on earth, only a handful of them fight for just causes. One of these celebrities is named Rachael Ray. Rachael Domenica Ray, born on August 25 of 1968, is an American television personality, businesswoman, celebrity chef and author. She is a big part of several various TV shows, and has displayed great success in her industry. Rachael Ray also happens to be a renowned animal rights activist. She created a website that essentially raised awareness for various issues and organizations that would ultimately aid the animal society.
Ms. Ray was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and raised in Lake George, New York. Throughout her childhood, she was luridly exposed the the food industry, surrounded by family restaurants and whatnot. One of her initial occupations in the food industry was the opening of a specialty food market called Agata & Valentina in New York City. In her future, Rachael Ray would ultimately develop her own new series,"30 Minute Meals,” which were soon picked up by a local television newscast. Rachael Ray would go on to win various Emmys and even collaborate with celebrities as big as Oprah.
Besides her successful career, she is also praised for something else, something even bigger. Rachael Ray is well-known for her charity work. Her charity work stretched from feeding children in need, all the way to the proper treatment of animals. It’s also important to take note of the success of her endeavors and the impact she’s made on these various realms of charity.
Rachael Ray established Yum-O!, a nonprofit organization with the intention of educating young people and their families about the importance of good nutrition and more importantly, the aiding of children in need. Ms. Raw also invented a website, featuring guides to help people properly feed their pets, making sure that they consume optimal nutrition. She’s even gone as far as to invent her own pet-food line, showing her true dedication to aiding animals.
Aside from these already-great factors of her website, Ms. Ray’s website helps in the raising of awareness about organizations that directly benefit animals that need it. And what’s more, a fraction of the profit received from selling her personal pet-food line is afterwards donated to these particular organizations.
So all in all, Rachael is a paragon of sorts, at least among the common celebrities. She’s famous, wealthy, and still decides to help the less fortunate. Her hard work pays off, not only for her, but for the people she is helping on a daily basis. Her charity work multiplies the impact of herself in regards to society. Perhaps if more celebrities were like Ms. Ray, then the world would be a lot safer place.

When one thinks of America’s number one sweetheart, one can’t help to think of no other than Betty White. Everyone might know her as a comedian from the 1900’s, but no one knows her as an animal lover and activist. Perhaps, you may know her for her role in Hot in Cleveland or for being one of the Golden Girls. Betty White is passionate about her work with animals as much as being an all time comedian. The six time Emmy winner has had a lifelong passion for animals ever since she was a small child."I'm the luckiest old broad on two feet because my life is divided absolutely in half - half animals and half show business. You can't ask for better than two things you love the most,” (White, “TV Guide Interview”) . She is truly an animal’s best friend.
Betty White was born in Oak Park, Illinois on January 17, 1922. When saw was two, she moved to Los Angeles with her family. Since then, she started working as a television assistant at a local television station. However, her love for animals started ever since she was a toddler. Her father, Horace White, was man who picked up stray animals from the street during the 1900’s depression. “I've loved animals since I was in the womb. I was the lucky little girl who had parents who went for a walk and they'd come home with a dog or a cat,” (White, “TV Guide Interview”). From then on, her love for animals became stronger. She later on started supporting animal foundations such as the Morris Animal Foundation which she has been funding since 1971 to have health studies for the wildlife. She has sponsored many animal studies that concerns many types of animals such as dogs, cats and sea otters. In addition, she’s also an animal advocate at the Los Angeles Zoo for the longest time in helping taking care of the animals.
In the end, Betty White spent a lifetime into dedicating her time into helping and taking care of animals. We are the fortunate ones who get to benefit her amazing talent and her loving affection for animals. Without a doubt, animal cruelty is a serious matter for her and it should be for us as well. Her passionate words delivers the spirit of animal activism from all around the world. She has clearly showed how lovable she is both on and off screen. From saving the wildlife to funding animal foundation and organizations, one can’t simply deny that with all her hard work she is truly an icon phenomena and a hero.

You may know him as the co-founder of Def Jams, the founder of Phat Farm, or as the older brother of Rev Joseph Simmons. I am talking about, of course, Russell Simmons the third richest person in the entire Hip-Hop industry. He was born on October 4, 1957 and was raised in Queens, New York. Not all of his attention is focused on hip hop or fashion, he also happens to be an animal and gay rights activist. Simmons is one of select celebrities who use their fame to voice what they support.
Russell Simmons is a supporter of Farm Sanctuary, which is an organization working to end cruelty inflicted on farm animals. His latest project is a clothing line called “Argyleculture”. It is “cruelty-free” meaning the line doesn’t use any wool or leather in its collection. Simmons is a determined supporter for animals. He sets a positive example for others by promoting the vegan lifestyle that he has been practicing for 13 years. PETA proudly awarded him Person of the Year of 2011. Russell encourages people to bring dogs inside to live as part of the family, to report animal cruelty, and to take stand against dogfighting.
Simmons is also fighting for the animals in the zoo. “As an animal rights activist I am well aware what a gift it is to see animals in their natural habitat as opposed to seeing them as captive animals in zoos where they are deprived of everything natural to them, often suffering from a condition called "zoochosis.” He believes animals should have the right to be free and have more space instead of being crowded in a small space filled with boredom. He is using his status to advocate on behalf of animals and veganism. Simmons is spending his time to make the world a kinder place.

The Story of Tami Akanuma

When a person thinks of heroes, they think of everyday heroes, such as the ones who enforce law, combats the scorching heats of fires, in any sense, heroes are made of those who risk their lives for others. Yet, there are heroes that always unexpected, ones who hidden in plain sight, and never seen until the time comes for them to take action. This hero is a 12-year-old Shih Tzu named Babu, a dog who had guided her elderly 83-year-old owner, Tami Akanuma, away from a devastating Tsunami that had swept her town away and flattened by muddy water. The reason why lives on today is because of her loyal dog Babu by bringing her away from this certain death.
It was on a normal day in Miyako, Japan, when all of a sudden, the elderly dog seemed disgruntled by a sudden urge to walk outside. Babu, never usually as upbeat to go on a walk, seemed to itching to leave the home where he and Akanuma had been living. Akanuma knew it was too early for her little dog to walk, but as soon as the power had gone out in her home, she finally decided to put the leash on her dog. Once outside, Akanuma had heard the warning from a city telecom and knew of the impending dangers. As she headed the normal route where she would walk, her dog was very reluctant to take the normal route. After a long arduous journey (about 219 yards away), Akanuma and Babu had watched their town flatten from the large tsunami.
Babu, knew what was going to happen before it even occurred, and even though Babu is a dog, he is still a silent hero who acted when he was needed the most. Akanuma may live longer knowing that her friend is out to protect her, no one is able to tell how Babu was able to detect that tsunami which would have taken both of their lives, but he did. It is said that animals do have a 6th sense in which we humans cannot yet comprehend, but it is because of that sense that Akanuma and Babu can live another day. This is proof of what we can learn from animals, and even be saved by these beings that we can call friends.
